Earth Day 2009
MAKE EVERY DAY EARTH DAY
Thank you to all our participants, partners and sponsors!

The activities for Earth Day conclude with impromptu Dog Park touch up.

Make every day Earth Day.  Palmetto Bay’s Earth week activities concluded with an impromptu Dog Park cleaning Sunday morning by Friends Forever Rescue.  Thank you Dee Chess and the wonderful volunteers of FFR – they are wonderful in assisting with ideas for the Dog Park and are always willing to roll up their sleeves and jump in and participate.  More information will be forthcoming.  There were many great events throughout the village with our partners.

Earth Day comes just once a year, on April 22, but the Village of Palmetto Bay celebrates all week long.

We actually started Earth conservation activities the third Friday of January. Palmetto Bay follows the State Arbor Day.  This adds another chance to focus on greening our communities, allowing April to be dedicated to Earth Day.

The Village Council actually got started on April 6, when we joined with partners at the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) when I declared April “Water Conservation Month”

This has been an exciting week for Palmetto Bay’s week long Earth Day activities.  The events were literally launched on Saturday, April 18, with the Tropical Audubon Society (TAS) sponsored guided kayak/canoe trips from Snowden's/Deering Point.  Special thanks to Laura Reynolds (Executive Director), Beth Kibler (Palmetto Bay resident) and Gabe Perez from the TAS.

Future community leaders from Alexander Montessori School and their Headmaster James McGhee rode the I-Bus Monday in taking part in a community clean up.

This is also National Library Week in Palmetto Bay.  In recognition, events continued Tuesday with the reading of environmental themed books to first and second graders from the Village Pines School at the Coral Reef Library.  Thank you to the Miami-Dade County Public Library System.  We look forward to events being held at the Palmetto Bay neighborhood library next year, where many of the surrounding residents will be able to access this library via bicycles.  Additional readings are scheduled.

Today is Earth Day and we will be releasing lady bugs with the students of Perrine and Coral Reef Elementary as well as Winhold Montessori School. This same event will repeat itself on Thursday at Howard Drive Elementary and Alexander Montessori School.

Make plans to bring the family to Coral Reef Park this Friday for the ever-popular Movie Night (Presentation at 7:30 p.m.; movie at 8 p.m.): Bring your own popcorn and blanket for a showing of “Bee Movie
http://www.palmettobay-fl.gov/pdfs/Parks%20-%20Rec/BeeMoviePoster.pdf at Coral Reef Park (7895 SW 152 St.). Bee-fore the 90-minute film starts, meet “Willie the Bee Man,” who gained recent notoriety for removing a 75-lb bee hive from a nearby home (for more on Willie: http://williethebeeman.com A former Miami-Dade kindergarten teacher, Willie is now a bee removal specialist who also speaks extensively on the importance of bees to the environment.

Finally, we end with the Neighborhood Bike Ride (Registration at 8 a.m.): This will be a fun morning ride to enjoy the natural surroundings of the Old Cutler Road bike path and Palmetto Bay’s Deering Estate. Registration at the Deering Visitor Center begins at 8 a.m., At 9 a.m., we will head out under the direction of a the Palmetto Bay Policing Unit Bike Patrol and Eric Tullberg, resident and long-time enthusiast, to enjoy a one-hour family bike ride. We will pass by the Ludlam Pine Rocklands, Deering’s Chinese Bridge, and take in the natural beauty of this area of our Village. Please see the Village website for a map: www.palmettobay-fl.gov Note: a short portion of the ride is along a gravel road through Deering.

We thank all the people, organizations, schools and other governmental agencies who have partnered with Palmetto Bay.  I will specifically thank the members of these fine groups at the end of this week.

We still have more to go.
These events continue into final implementation of our Land Development Code, currently undergoing its final drafts, working to include green elements into our village code.  Stay tuned and participate.

As we move forward, we can all continue to work to make every day Earth Day.
