Both the County and Village emergency web sites should be bookmarked and reviewed each year as part of your personal/family emergency plans.
I urge everyone to be ready. Have your emergency plans and kits ready now – remember, there was no hurricane sales tax holiday this year, so the yearly supply update and purchases may have slipped some minds.
Self-sufficiency is important. You need to be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for the first 72 hours. You need to have all the necessary supplies - water, canned food, a flashlight, a battery-operated radio, a phone with a cord (power outages) and hardware for your hurricane shutters.
We should all know the precautions. Make sure you are ready to secure your home. Plan ahead as to where you'll go if an evacuation is ordered in your area.
Miami-Dade County has some important resources to help keep you informed and prepared, like the free Hurricane Guide and Miami-Dade Alerts, a wireless emergency alerting system. Internet users can register for this free service and receive local weather and hurricane alerts.
I encourage everyone to register online at http://www.inspironlogistics.com/wens/miami_dade/wens.cfm?wens_id=miami_dade
